A. A Turkish Gullet is a
traditional design of boat, made mainly of wood and has masts and sails. These
days they are converted into luxury multi-birth cruisers for tourists to
experience. To get some idea of a Gullet Cruise see Ed's report "Gullet
Cruises from Turkish resorts".
3.Q. Which
is the best Airport for this region and what about transfer to the resort?
A. Izmir's main Airport (Adnan
Menderes) is central and has a lot of international flights (including a BA
service from Gatwick Airport) see Ed's report "Izmir
Airport and Transfers".
4.Q. Can
I use my UK driving license in Turkey?
A. Yes. As a foreigner you
can hire, own and drive a vehicle in Turkey on a valid UK
driving license.
5.Q. What
is Turkish food like?
A. Turkish food is distinct and
diverse and I cannot explain in just a few words, so click on this Utube video and it
will give you some idea:-
6.Q. Do
I need a Residency Permit to stay in Turkey?
A. When you arrive in the
country you will be issued with a 3 month visa (this is in the form of a
stamp which is stuck into your passport). If you intend to stay more than 3
months in the country you should in theory apply for a Residents Permit.
However this is a complicated and expensive business and you soon learn in
Turkey that theory and practice are not the same. The easiest and cheapest
thing to do is what most of the expats do and go for a day trip to a Greek
Island and get a new 3 month visa. This way the cost £10 a time but its
still considerable cheaper than a Residents Permit. Also see the report on "Residents
Permit or Visa".
7.Q. Can
you recommend of a small coastal resort within this region that is not
packed with tourists and gives you a flavor of the real Turkey?
A. You need a Tax Number in
Turkey for many simple transaction and application forms (i.e. Application
for a bank account). It is easy to obtain you just go along to the local tax
office in your town and they will be more than willing to allocate you with one.
